    Q & A 06.21.24

    Dr. Spencer

    Hey Doc,

    No case study for tomorrow, but I do have a burning question.

    Per some published research, I’ve been concerned that the added calcium citrate in my diet may be pushing my overall dairy intake beyond a safe range. There is no question in my mind that calcium citrate has improved my oxalate removal/phase 2 detox. RDA for calcium is 1000 mg, but some experts recommend staying around 800-900mg/day. I’ve assumed that adequate amounts of vitamin K2, D3, magnesium and HCL offer some protection against atherosclerosis and bone spurs. What are your thoughts?

    Calcium in higher doses is toxic as it is actually defined as a “metal” in the periodic table of elements. So, smaller doses are much preferred. When we use the Bone Support Vegetarian product, you only get between 300-400mg of extra calcium citrate per day, much lower than other products which can sometimes range above 1000mg or 1500mg per day.

    1) 17 year old female with life long digestive distress. Dairy invokes cramping, nausea, diarrhea. Joint pain in knees and back which increases the week before and of menstruation. Very heavy and painful periods (28/5). Had to double up pads prior to starting BCP . Currently on Junel and takes three 21 day packs and then one week off which has decreased pain and heaviness. Mom was diagnosed with endometriosis in past. Patient also suffers from severe anxiety and OCD, racing thoughts (fear of germs, dying) which is a major concern.

    What type of testing would you recommend? Patient came in seeking food sensitivity testing and hormone testing. I explained that a DUTCH test would only be accurate if she were to go off the pill for three months to regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary communication. I originally thought that I would start with the KBMO to test for food sensitivities, gut barrier panel, candida and LPS but now I am thinking that an OAT would give us more valuable info?

    Use the bioterrain lab test and OAT as a starting point. Look at simple things like an elimination diet (modified) – GF, DF, SF, avoiding corn, sugar, processed foods…basically modified Paleo;

    2) I would love to hear your thoughts on my recent test results!

    OAT attached…..Poor mitochondrial health #24-29. Any further correlation with high tartaric acid and high oxalates that would cause these elevations. Impaired fatty acid oxidation as well. #61 is elevated but not bacterial markers on page 1……SIBO?

    PROTOCOL:

    Mito Recharge – 3 BID

    Cellular Energy – 2 BID

    Bone Support Vegetarian – 2 before meals

    65 year old male prostate removed 2021 due to prostate cancer. Has been on testosterone replacement therapy since 2005. Compound heterozygous MTHFR and on comprehensive methylation support. DUTCH indicates low methylation and high E3. Is also taking cortisol lowering adaptogens for high levels of job stress…..is this lowering his free cortisol too much?
